  3. You hit the nail squarely on its head when you say you insist on using the Chan-Jie input method for typing up Han characters. Imaginably you are well on your way to join the super memory club in your golden age as you keep Alzheimer disease at bay by exercising your brain power to engage in such graphic transport-in system. What matters more in our golden sunset years than the old dog standing on its toes and learning new tricks? (smile) BTW (not exactly!), if you happen to know how best a novice like me can learn the wonderful input system you mentioned, please enlighten me. Thank you in advance for your patience, generosity and expertize. Please rest assured such complimentary remarks cannot be classified as Pour-Water you previously posted. Duo Hsieh Lah. (of course, no puns intended; hence, with-out the knife!)

  5. Ben,

I learned Cangjie on my own years ago. There are no shortcuts or tips, you just need to get a book (maybe there are webpages now) and learn the principles and then start typing. A good friend of mine, who’s an American Sinologist, mastered (not just learned) the input system in less than one month.

And average learners can start typing much faster than they can write with their hands in a couple of weeks. I’m not exaggerating. It’s possible because it is a system that makes sense, it’s not about memorizing anything — it’s a continuation of the thousands of years of the Hanzi lineage.

I remember at that time there was a cute little program (made by 奇異公司 of Taipei, who made the BEST Chinese system for early Macs) where characters come out one after the other and you try to enter the correct code for each — just like a duck-shooting game. I’m not sure where it’s at now in terms of Cangjie learning aids, but, as i said, all you really need is an average Cangjie guidebook (or webpage) and just start typing.

The Cangjie Input System is NOT a technical invention. It is a sublime art form in itself. As its name claims, it is a system, an effort, an appreciation of the heritage of Hanzi script, which started with Mr. Cang Jie himself, or the ancients who actually invented the script collectively.

    So, have fun!
